Authors gain inspiration from the world around them, J. E. Friend is no different. She enjoys people watching and exploring the country looking for character traits and scene locations. She often incorporates places she has been into her stories and although she doesn't copy actual people in her characters, she does take creative license. It may be a gesture made, a sound or an expression. Building upon the basis of her characters to give them more lifelike qualities.
J. E. Friend has a Bachelor's Degree from Waterloo, where her focus was in psychology. She uses this background when delving into the minds of her killers. What makes them tick? Was there a trauma that set them on the direction to kill?
To hone her craft, she has attended many workshops and retreats where authors feed off each other's energy and receive feedback on their work.
